AI-powered chatbots now offer instant conversations, seemingly providing support for those struggling with anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges. However, as the American Psychological Association (APA) recently warned, relying on AI as a substitute for licensed therapists comes with significant risks.
While AI chatbots can mimic human conversation, they lack the clinical expertise, ethical judgment, and emotional depth that define psychotherapy. These bots are primarily designed to keep users engaged and collect data—often for profit—rather than prioritizing mental health. The illusion of a caring, knowledgeable presence can be dangerously misleading, particularly for vulnerable individuals and youth.
